Foreign Travel Conversion
and
Meal Per Diem


It may be helpful to print this page out and follow along while doing your calculations.

 

Currency Conversion:

To convert your foreign travel receipts you can use this website, www.oanda.com. From the opening page:

  1. Click the link to the "FX converter" on the left side of your screen.
  2. Fill in your foreign total, the date of the transaction, and then the currency you wish to convert (ex. EUR to USD).
  3. Click the "convert now" button. Print out the page and attach it to the receipt and fill in the converted dollar amount on the Expense Form. (please round decimals to hundredths, .00)
  4. Repeat for each expense you need to convert.

Calculating Foreign Meal Per Diem:

To find the Foreign Meal Per Diem for your destination city:

  1. Go to http://aoprals.state.gov/content.asp?content_id=184&menu_id=78
  2. Select the month of your trip. If your trip spans over 2 months please use the appropriate meal per diem for each month.
  3. Use the amount in the “Meal & I.E.” column, which is the second column from the left. Each individual meal is broken down as follows:

 

    • 15% Breakfast (if trip begins before 6:30am)
    • 25% Lunch (trip begins or ends between 11am and 12pm)
    • 60% Dinner (if trip begins or ends after 6:30pm)
